In attesa delle nomination agli Oscar, annunciate il 23 gennaio, i GLAAD Media Awards hanno ufficializzato le proprie candidature.

Premi assegnati dalla Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation alle persone e alle produzioni dell’intrattenimento, per il loro contribuito nel dare un’immagine più veritiera e accurata della comunità LGBT e delle questioni che riguardano la loro vita, i GLAAD del 2018 vedono Chiamami col tuo nome del nostro Luca Guadagnino in prima fila.

Arrivati alla 29esima edizione, gli Oscar della comunità LGBT americana verranno assegnati attraverso due cerimonie. La prima a Los Angeles, il 12 aprile, la seconda a New York, il 5 maggio. Tra le pellicole candidate anche The Shape of Water, già Leone d’Oro, Lady Bird, La battaglia dei Sessi e Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Tra le pellicole che non hanno avuto una release nazionale negli States,  sfida aperta tra il britannico God’s Own Country, Thelma, 120 Battiti al minuto e Una Donna Fantastica.

In ambito ‘drama’ televisivo sarà sfida a 5 (su 10 candidature) tra la pluri-premiata The Handmaid’s Tale, Billions, This Is Us, Star Trek: Discovery e Sense 8, pronto al definitivo canto del cigno con l’ultima puntatona da due ore, mentre tra le comedy è probabile il ritorno con il botto per Will and Grace, in corsa con Transparent e Modern Family. In ambito mini-serie è facile ipotizzare un trionfo per When We Rise  di Dustin Lance Black, mentre per quanto riguarda i reality sarà sfida a due tra RuPaul e Gaycation di Ellen Page. Un premio speciale è stato assegnato al video ‘Smile’, di Jay-Z, che ha visto sua mamma Gloria Carter fare coming out. Un altro riconoscimento speciale è infine andato al cortometraggio animato In A Heartbeat, che è diventato virale sul web.
