Nella notte sono andati in scena i Tony Awards 2025, ovvero gli Oscar del teatro a stelle e strisce, con una vittoria semplicemente storica. Cole Escola, 38enne comicə, attorə, cantante, cabarettista e commediografə statunitense, ha vinto il premio come Miglior Attore Protagonista in uno spettacolo teatrale per la sua prova in «Oh, Mary!», farsa satirica sulla vita di Abraham Lincoln e Mary Todd Lincoln.

Dichiaratamente “no-binary” dal 2022, Escola è così diventata la prima persona apertamente non binaria a ricevere il Tony Award nella categoria “miglior attore in una Play”. Nel 2023 furono Alex Newell e e J. Harrison Ghee a riuscire nell’impresa, ma come miglior attore non protagonista e migliore attore protagonista in un musical.
A consegnare il premio ad Escola sono state Jean Smart e Sarah Paul.
“Voglio ringraziare gli altri candidati: George, Jon, Harry, Daniel e Louis. È un onore essere in vostra compagnia, ma più di tutto è stato un vero piacere passare del tempo insieme… tra queste insalate tiepide a tutti quei pranzi. Ciao mamma. Ti voglio bene. Ti chiamo appena posso“, ha teneramente detto Escola dal palco dopo aver sconfitto in volata i colleghi George Clooney, Jon Michael Hill, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Lennix e Louis McCartney, per poi ringraziare anche un tale di Grindr tra le risate generali.
La vittoria di Escola, ma anche quelle di Newell e Ghee nel 2023, rilancia la polemica sulle categorie di genere nei premi recitativi, con persone non-binary costrette a competere in categorie in cui non si riconoscono. Avrebbe senso premiare semplicemente la miglior performance, da protagonisti e non, andando oltre la suddivisione uomo/donna?
Vistə in tv in serie come Smash, Difficult People, Mozart in the Jungle, Girlboss, Man Seeking Woman e Search Party, Escola ha scritto Oh, Mary!, commedia già premiata con il Theatre World Award, il Drama Desk Award e l’Outer Critics Circle Award, oltre ad aver strappato una nomination al Premio Pulitzer per la drammaturgia. In Oh, Mary! Escola ha interpretato la First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Alla cerimonia dei Tony Cole si è presentatə con un abito argentato e una parrucca in omaggio all’iconica Bernadette Peters, che vinse il premio nel 1999.

Nel corso della serata il musical che ha sbaragliato la concorrenza è stato “Maybe Happy Ending”, con ben 6 statuette vinte, comprese quelle per il miglior musical e per il miglior attore protagonista Darren Criss, al suo primo Tony. 38 anni, l’ex divo di Glee ha così arricchito la sua già ampia bacheca, dopo aver vinto un Emmy Award, un Golden Globe, un Critics’ Choice Award e uno Screen Actors Guild Award per aver magnificamente interpretato Andrew Cunanan nella seconda stagione di American Crime Story.

Primo trionfo ai Tony anche per Nicole Scherzinger, ex Pussycat Dolls da tempo attrice teatrale a tempo pieno. Dopo aver preso parte a Cats la popstar ha incantato Broadway con Sunset Boulevard, vincendo il premio come miglior attrice in un musical.
