I Tony Awards 2024, ovvero gli Oscar del teatro, sono stati assegnati nella notte, con Ariana DeBose ancora una volta alla conduzione e Broadway che ha visto diversi divi di Hollywood conquistare i primi riconoscimenti. Angelina Jolie è ufficialmente entrata nel mitologico club EGOT, che comprende quegli artisti riusciti a conquistare almeno un Emmy, un Grammy, un Oscar e per l’appunto un Tony. Jolie ha prodotto il musical The Oudsiders, in trionfo nella notte insieme alla sua regista, Danya Taymor.
Daniel Radcliffe, indimenticabile ‘Harry Potter’, ha conquistato il Tony come miglior attore non protagonista nel revival di un musical con ‘Merrily We Roll Along’, così come il suo collega di palco Jonathan Groff, incoronato miglior attore protagonista. 39enne e da sempre gay dichiarato, Groff è stato Jesse St. James in Glee, Patrick Murray in Looking e il nuovo amore di Ncuti Gatwa nell’ultima puntata di Doctor Who. Era già stato nominato ai Tony nel 2007 con Spring Awakening e nel 2016 con Hamilton. Merrily We Roll Along, musical di Stephen Sondheim e George Furth, tratto dall’omonima commedia di George S. Kaufman e Moss Hart, ripercorre al contrario la storia dell’amicizia tra il compositore Franklin Shepard, il paroliere Charles Kringas e la scrittrice Mary Flynn, dalla definitiva rottura nel 1976 al suo inizio nel 1957.

Anche se non sempre mi capivano, la mia famiglia conosceva il potere salvifico di alimentare la fiamma delle passioni di un giovane senza giudizio. Quando ero un bambino in Pennsylvania, registravo i Tony Awards su un VHS e guardavo le esibizioni ancora e ancora”. “E poter effettivamente prendere parte al teatro in questa città, e allo stesso modo poter osservare il lavoro di questa incredibile, incredibile comunità è stato il dono e il piacere più grande della mia vita“. L’attore ha poi concluso ringraziando i suoi co-protagonisti, Radcliffe e Lindsay Mendez: “Siete più che vecchi amici; siete anime gemelle e non vedo l’ora di vederci cambiare per il resto delle nostre vite“.

Sarah Paulson ha vinto il Tony come miglior protagonista per un’opera teatrale grazie all’acclamata prova d’attrice in ‘Appropriate’. Si tratta del primo Tony alla prima candidatura per Paulson, che ha sconfitto l’ex collega in American Horror Story Jessica Lange, da aggiungere al Golden Globe, all’Emmy, al SAG, ai Critics’ Choice Awards e Satellite Awards già vinti. Da quasi 10 anni Sarah fa coppia con l’attrice Holland Taylor, citata nel discorso di ringraziamento con un dolcissimo “perché mi ami“.

Maleah Joi Moon ha infine conquistato il Tony come miglior attrice in un musical, ovvero Hell’s Kitchen, storia di Alicia Keys, mentre Jeremy Strong è stato eletto miglior attore protagonista in un’opera teatrale per ‘An Enemy of the People’.
